But we also believe that, as a leading and expert contractor, we have a valuable role to play from the very start of the planning stages. So we’d love to talk to architects and specifiers about how we can work together.

All too often, subcontractors’ roles are limited to fulfilling their particular function of the construction process in isolation. However, we have expertise which can often greatly influence the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and lifespan of a building.

Take fire safety for example. We have two of the UK’s leading experts in passive fire protection under our own roof at ISD Solutions – both Adrian Smith, our managing director, and Brett Harrington, our divisional manager for firewalls and data centres, have achieved the new Level 3 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection from the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE).

That puts us right at the top of the tree for fire expertise among construction contractors. Why would you not engage that expertise from the planning stages? We can provide independent advice on the best options for your project, free from pressure to promote a particular product or material.

We also have an outstanding in-house design department, a unique feature for a company of ISD’s size. This has been established over the last three years, and in the last 12 months the team has expanded to include seven people, three of whom have extensive experience from previous roles in project management.

So we want to coordinate our efforts with other elements of the building programme, securing early involvement to reduce the risk of problems further down the line.

We have massively developed our abilities in Revit 3D modelling, creating a series of Families to provide better information so we can examine and challenge various elements of the design process. And with our understanding of the growing importance of BIM, we have appointed an accredited BIM coordinator who is fast approaching a high level of collaboration at Level 2, involving the sharing of models with our clients’ design teams.

So rather than just meeting industry standards, we want to set them. Since we were established in 1946, we have been consistently raising the expectations of how contractors work, contributing to the modernisation of the construction industry in order to promote safety, sustainability and longevity.
