ISD Project Team Shortlisted for RAC Cooling Award

Gloucester 2 September 2016: Gloucester-based ISD Solutions, which has been manufacturing insulated panels and doors for cold room storage solutions for 70 years, is working with other contractors to build one of the UK’s most innovative and environmentally-friendly cold stores.

This pioneering project has been shortlisted for a RAC Cooling Award under the Environmental Collaboration of the Year category.

The remit was to expand a temperature-controlled distribution centre for Turners (Soham) Ltd (‘Turners’) at its Bicker site. Turners approached FJB Systems LLP with a requirement for a new energy centre, with chilled pallet spaces, cross-docking and packaging area totalling 5500m².

Temperature-controlled distribution centres are energy heavy, with refrigeration accounting for 50-60% of overall energy use. Turners wanted to really push the bar in environmental design.

Meeting tough environmental goals required all contractors to share experience, expertise and skills, working together as one multi-disciplinary team. Close collaboration has resulted in real innovation, where environmental results speak for themselves.

Existing HFCs are being replaced with a more natural and efficient refrigerant; rejected heat is reclaimed to heat offices; rainwater will be used in toilets; LED lighting systems will use 50-90% less energy; solar panels are being installed and ‘rapid doors’ minimise temperature fluctuation.

Notably, as the first UK contractor to use revolutionary new insulated panelling, ISD recommended the vastly-improved thermal properties of Kingspan’s Quadcore panels to dramatically reduce energy consumption.

They are thermally and structurally guaranteed for 40 years, have better fire protection and are 100% recyclable. ISD is championing UK expertise in cold store installation and is creating 6 new jobs in manufacturing, with at least one apprentice, in the next 3 years.

Additionally, ISD will be sponsoring the Retail Project of Year

Tony Wall, Managing Director of ISD Solutions explained: “We are delighted to be sponsoring this prestigious award category that recognises innovation in the retail sector, with submissions from high profile household names that are genuinely moving the sustainability and performance bar ever-upwards. As the UK’s leading specialist sub-contractor in cold storage construction, temperature controlled distribution centres and outlets for the retail sector, this category is a perfect fit for our business and sustainability credentials.”

We are experts in cold storage construction, firewalls, data-centres and single envelope cladding.
