Introduction

Building envelope contractors, ISD Solutions secured the contract to provide a full range of composite panel systems within a major development of the Charlton Distribution centre for Sainburys, the leading UK retailer..

Each package is sizeable in its own right and ISD resources allowed a separate team for each discipline, with each team headed by a separate and experienced Project Manager. The overall contract was co-ordinated in-house by a team of ISD Directors.

Project

The project involved several disciplines within the division with the external envelope, cladding, roofing, lightning protection, rainwater goods, firewall, internal fit -out including panelling, doors, louvers etc. were provided and installed by ISD.

The construction was carried out on an existing Sainsbury’s site. Working on existing sites always has its issues with lack of space; however these were overcome by all trades working together with the main contractor McLaren Construction which resulted in the project being completed on time.

The main envelope chill and ambient walls sit on a thermal wall to the loading docks areas. The detailing, vapour sealing and weathering to these areas proved challenging.

The 350,000 sq ft (32,500m2) building is to be used for Sainsbury’s as a distribution outlet and incorporates ambient, freezer, produce and chilled areas.

The walls and roof were constructed with Kingspan PIR composite panels. Roof membrane and roofing elements also included a Brown roof with a nature area over the Goods In offices.
